A Cleveland man now faces charges for allegedly robbing a postal worker, an incident that ended in a high-speed chase. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Northern Ohio released a criminal complaint that 19-year-old Delshawn Durval Legg threatened a United States Postal Service (USPS) carrier with a gun and took her belongings, including postal keys and mail, on West Long Street in Akron on December 29. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Northern Ohio, the assailants made their escape in a stolen car from the Great Lakes Honda dealership.
Wearing dark clothing and masks, the perpetrators who surrounded the USPS employee demanded the keys under violent threat. After fleeing the scene with her USPS satchel and other items, the police later located the getaway car on Kinsman Road in Cleveland. When the police attempted a traffic stop, Legg led them on a high-speed pursuit, which ended when he abandoned the car and tried to flee on foot. A K9 unit was deployed and successfully apprehended Legg, while an at-large accomplice remains unknown.
The official complaint states that if Legg is convicted, he could be sentenced to up to 10 years for the robbery charges and additional time for using a firearm during the act. The investigation has been a collaborative effort, involving the USPIS Cleveland Field Office, Akron Police Department, Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Office, and the Cleveland Division of Police, overseen by Assistant U.S. Attorney Kristen Rolph.
While this case is still open, the USPIS, as the law enforcement and security arm of the USPS, is actively seeking information on similar crimes. They handle matters involving postal carrier assaults and mail-related offenses. Citizens with any leads are encouraged to contact USPIS at 1-877-876-2455, keeping all shared information under the veil of confidentiality. A reminder, however, that a criminal complaint only signals allegations. "All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law," the U.S. Attorney's Office emphasizes for the sake of due process.
