Abbott’s Frozen Custard has slipped out of McKinney almost as quietly as it arrived. Regulars who once queued up for cones and thick milkshakes showed up in December to find the walk-up stand dark and a farewell note taped to the door. The shop, which had been serving the neighborhood since early 2024, left a parting message saying ownership is exploring ways to bring Abbott’s back to the Dallas–Fort Worth area, although no timeline was offered.
According to Community Impact, onsite signage at the McKinney stand announced it had "served its last scoop" in December and noted the store originally opened in March 2024. At the same time, the national "Find An Abbott's Location" tool no longer shows any Texas shops, a change reflected on the chain's official locator run by Abbott's Frozen Custard.
Signs of a Wider Pullback in Texas
The McKinney closure is not an isolated fluke. A Houston-area Abbott’s in Atascocita shut down in November, as reported by the Houston Chronicle. Yet the Texas franchise operator is still signaling life for the brand in the state: its separate website lists locations in cities including Kyle and Lubbock, with details posted on AbbottsTX. The disconnect between the corporate locator and the franchisee’s page has left custard fans trying to sort out which Abbott’s shops are truly here to stay.
What This Means for Fans
The signs on the McKinney storefront, first reported by Community Impact, say owners are looking at options for a possible return, but that is as specific as it gets. Community Impact also reported that a nearby Abbott’s in Prosper served its last scoop in late December, a closure detailed by Community Impact. For now, anyone holding out hope for a comeback will need to keep an eye on the corporate "Locations" page and the Texas franchise site for any sign that Abbott’s plans to return to North Texas.
