Commissioner George Teal has officially been named the Chair of the Board of Douglas County Commissioners, stepping into the role on January 13. According to Douglas County, Commissioner Kevin Van Winkle will be assuming the position of Vice Chair. The shift in roles follows a majority vote, adhering to a practice of rotating leadership within the board.
Expressing his gratitude, Teal acknowledged the trust placed in him by his peers. "We honor a tradition of rotating leadership on the Board of Douglas County Commissioners, but we also know it’s always a choice on who will represent us as Chairman," Teal said, as obtained by Douglas County. "I appreciate the faith and confidence of my colleagues to allow me to serve as Chairman of the Board this year." Teal, who began his tenure as a county commissioner in 2021 after being elected to represent District II, has previously served for six years on the Castle Rock Town Council.
Previous Chair, Commissioner Abe Laydon, is set to chair the Metro Area County Commissioners in 2026, a collective representing over half of Colorado's population across seven counties. Teal, Van Winkle, and Laydon continue as the three-member main policy-making body for Douglas County, a council elected at large from within the county to serve staggered four-year terms.
