Deni Avdija's comeback performance with the Portland Trail Blazers made waves last night as he put up 26 points to secure a 117-110 victory over the Sacramento Kings. Avdija, who had been sidelined with a back injury, showed no signs of slowing down, rounding out a solid stat line with eight assists and rebounds apiece, as noted by CBS News Sacramento. The Blazers' triumph brings them to a .500 win-loss ratio for the first time since mid-November last year.
Not only did Avdija dazzle in his return, but teammates like Shaedon Sharpe and Donovan Clingan also delivered impressive performances. Sharpe matched Avdija's scoring output with 26 points, while Clingan pulled down a significant 17 rebounds in addition to his 21 points. Toumani Camara contributed with 17 points, propelling the Blazers to their third win against the Kings this season. Despite a 14-point lead dwindling early in the fourth quarter, Portland managed to hold on, and Clingan’s contributions were crucial down the stretch.
Avdija’s return was timely as the Trail Blazers were playing without Jrue Holiday, Jerami Grant, and Robert Williams III, who were out due to injury management. Acting coach Tiago Splitter referenced Avdija’s performance as "Not bad for a guy that was out for like a week,” a sentiment obtained by OregonLive. The night before starters for the All-Star Game are announced, Avdija, who has been in the midst of an All-Star caliber season, certainly made an impression.
The Kings showed resilience, riding on the momentum of a four-game winning streak before facing the Blazers. Malik Monk contributed 23 points and was backed by Russell Westbrook, who added 20 points and seven assists. Even with Domantas Sabonis struggling in only his second game back after a long injury hiatus, Sacramento kept fighting back, keeping the final score more competitive than the game often seemed. The loss places the Kings at a disappointing 12-31 as they continue to grapple with the season.
Looking forward, the Trail Blazers are set to host Miami on Thursday, while the Kings will welcome the same Miami team earlier tomorrow.
