As the Detroit Auto Show welcomes the public, the ripple effects are strongly felt by the local economy, with businesses across the board, from hotels to restaurants, experiencing an uptick in patronage. According to a ClickOnDetroit report, establishments like Sugah Please are staffing up, anticipating droves of attendees, both local and out-of-towners. "We love to see guests come in from in town, out of town, whatever. We love them," the restaurant’s manager, Candace Lilly, noted.
The economic significance of the event is clear with figures cited by FOX 2 Detroit, suggesting an influx of about 275,000 people bolstering the economy by approximately $370 million during last year’s auto show. Moreover, Detroit has reaped the benefits of the auto show to the tune of $5 billion over the past two decades, punctuating not just a seasonal surge but a long-term contribution to the city's financial health.
Amid the anticipation for new car models and state-of-the-art automotive technology, local venues are also in the spotlight. Mootz Pizzeria's manager, Barbara Cangialosi, shared with WXYZ that the auto show period marks one of their busiest times, saying, "We're always bumping on the weekends. We're always busy, but we can expect more with lots of families coming in with kids and just families coming to the auto show and looking for food afterward."
Such public events, especially in traditionally slower business months like January and February, provide a crucial boost. McShane’s Irish Pub looks to the auto show to break the winter lull. "The auto show being in January again is definitely a bonus for everybody involved, I think downtown and the surrounding area," the pub's manager, Rita Cazares, mentioned, according to ClickOnDetroit. The city basks in a vibrant pulse as guests intersperse their automotive enthusiasm with encounters in Detroit's colorful culinary scene.
The event’s significance stretches beyond the economic, touching on personal traditions and communal spirit. As a Detroit native, Kimberly Phenix, conveyed to WXYZ, the auto show marks her birthday celebration, resonating with fond family memories. This sentiment aligns with the sentiment of many locals for whom the auto show has become a staple winter activity.
