In what is shaping up to be a moment of collective action, a downtown Las Vegas pizza shop is making a stand by closing its doors this Friday as part of a larger nationwide protest. The cause at hand—the ongoing struggles in Minnesota and the actions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)—has inspired Yukon Pizza to join in a demonstration that extends far beyond the confines of their kitchen. In a social media post captured by FOX5 Vegas, they signaled their intent to participate in the National Day of Action, aligning their small business with a movement of people demanding change.
Alex White, owner of Yukon Pizza, expressed in a statement obtained by FOX5 Vegas a deep commitment to the cause, “We are small business owners. We are family-owned and operated. We don’t have a restaurant backing group. We don’t have funding. We don’t have hospitality, you know, this or that. It’s just the family. And we are putting our, our stuff on the line because we are one voice of many trying to, to be a part of something that says this has to stop now.”
The nationwide economic blackout is not limited to the hospitality industry; businesses across sectors are sending a unified message of solidarity. The mission is clear—urge people across the nation to call out from work or school, refraining from shopping to mark the National Day of Action about which News3LV reported. The intended impact is to amplify the concerns of communities grappling with the actions of ICE and resonate with the events unfolding in Minnesota.
Organizers are urging people to contact local leaders and call for change, turning the day into one focused on civic action rather than consumer activity.
