According to a recent release by the City of Durham, city offices, including City Hall and all non-emergency facilities, will be closed to the public on January 19.
The Durham Environmental and Street Services will also observe the holiday by closing, which means that the usual Monday garbage, recycling, and yard waste collections are pushed to January 20, with the other collection days remaining as scheduled, in the weekly rotation residents will receive collection day alerts and reminders for holiday service changes through the department's web page or the Durham Rollout app.
For those looking to participate in local governance, the City Council meeting typically held on the third Monday of the month will instead occur on Tuesday, January 20, at 7 p.m., and will also be accessible via livestream through multiple digital platforms including the City's website, YouTube, and Facebook pages, and on Roku, Apple TV, and Amazon Fire TV using the Boxcast app – the meeting will be aired live on various local TV networks, details on virtual or in-person participation can be found on the City Council's web page.
On the recreational side, Durham Parks and Recreation (DPR) administrative office and facilities are closed, except for certain rentals, however, prior to the holiday, DPR will honor Dr. King's memory through an arts event on Saturday, January 10, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at W.D. Concerning transportation, GoDurham and GoDurham ACCESS, will run on a Sunday-level service schedule from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. on the day of observance, and for real-time service updates, residents are encouraged to call the support number, download the Transit App, or follow GoDurham on social channels.
For those in need of customer service, Durham One Call will not be operating on January 19; however, residents may still submit service requests through various online channels, which staff will address on the following business day, and in case of emergency water and sewer issues, the Water Management Department's emergency number will be available.
