Durham Offers Convenient and Free Christmas Tree Disposal Options to ResidentsSource: City of Durham

As January takes hold, Durham residents are presented with hassle-free methods to dispose of their live Christmas trees. The city has laid out clear instructions for tree preparation before disposal, as reported by the City of Durham's official website. Trees must be cut in half if they stand over six feet tall, and all decorations, tinsel, lights, garland, ornaments, nails, and stands must be removed. Moreover, these trees should not be enclosed within bags when presented for disposal.

This year, there's no cost associated with getting rid of that festive fir or pine. For current yard waste and exempt service customers, curbside collections are conveniently taking place from January 2 through February 2, according to the city’s announcement. As was clearly stated, "Current customers should place their tree at the curb on their normal collection day. There is no need to make a service request." This service is especially advantageous because it does not impact the quota for free brush collections.

For those who prefer or require an alternate drop-off point, the City’s Waste Disposal and Recycling Center located at 2115 E. Club Blvd. is welcoming live trees without charge. Operating hours for tree disposal run from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 7:30 a.m. to noon on Saturdays, extending until February 7. The City has facilitated additional convenience for the community with other drop-off locations open from 8 a.m. to noon on select Saturdays in January, specifically on the 3rd, 10th, 17th, and 24th at various Home Depot and Lowe's Home Improvement stores throughout the region.
