The Southeast Durham Watershed Improvement Team is set to take center stage, presenting their water quality findings at a public event geared toward residents of the city and county. This information session, slated for January 20, offers both in-person attendance and a virtual join-in option for those interested in the conditions of local creeks and the initiatives aimed at enhancing their quality.

Revealed in a press release from the City of Durham, the session will commence at 6 p.m. at the Durham County East Regional Library, with virtual access made simple through a Zoom meeting or a dial-in phone option. Scientists are prepped to share findings from their extensive field work, which, from April to June 2025, saw them traversing nearly 35 miles to evaluate stormwater control measures across roughly 100 sites in the region.

The snapshots provided by these assessments suggest that Stirrup Iron, Lick, and Brier creek watersheds hang in a balance between fair and good conditions, but with definitive space for advancement. Taking center stage in this endeavor, City and County staff have crossed disciplines and municipalities, forming a nexus of collaboration within the Southeast Durham Watershed Improvement Plan.

Environmental insight gleaned from this comprehensive research will lay the groundwork for the next phases of the project, which anticipates the roll-out of projects aiming to bolster water quality further. “This work helps us better understand the condition of our streams and where improvements are needed,” Raven McLaurin, Senior Watershed Restoration Engineer told the City of Durham. McKenzie Bradshaw, Durham County Stormwater Manager added, “We want to make sure our decisions help both the community and the environment. We’re excited to meet with residents and discuss what happens next.”
