Environmental groups have filed lawsuits against the City of Sacramento over the Airport South Industrial Annexation project, which plans to convert over 450 acres of farmland near the Sacramento International Airport into warehouses, restaurants, and hotels. The legal challenge claims the city council’s December 2025 approval of the environmental impact report was unlawful and did not fully consider alternatives, as reported by Sacramento Bee.
Critics warn the development could worsen traffic, destroy wildlife habitats, and eliminate farmland cultivated since 1937, affecting nearby Paso Verde Elementary and residential neighborhoods. The project was approved by a 5-2 city council vote, prompting environmental organizations to seek legal intervention to halt its progress, according to Sacramento Bee.
Heather Fargo, president of the Environmental Council of Sacramento and former mayor, said, "They had a chance to listen, and they had a chance to act, and they voted for the project," calling for legal action to challenge the project, as stated by CBS News Sacramento. City officials have not commented due to ongoing lawsuits, and NorthPoint Development, the project's developer, has not responded. The Sacramento Local Agency Formation Commission is expected to vote in the coming months on whether to approve the annexation of the land.
