The National Weather Service in Jacksonville has issued an Extreme Cold Watch in effect from Saturday evening through Sunday afternoon, with the possibility of dangerously cold wind chills plunging as low as 7 degrees above zero. This is compounded by a concurrent Freeze Watch, warning of sub-freezing temperatures that could drop to a chilling 21 degrees. These conditions are expected to impact various parts of northeast and northern Florida and southeast Georgia, including cities like Jacksonville, Fernandina Beach, and Saint Augustine.
With this harsh weather in the forecast, residents are advised to take protective measures. The NWS warns that dangerously cold wind chills as low as 5 above zero could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes. More alarmingly, prolonged exposure could result to frostbite and hypothermia if skin remains unprotected. The service also cautions that pipes may burst if they freeze, and advices that proper precautions be taken to protect fragile vegetation and outdoor pets.
The NWS recommendations for those who must face the elements include dressing in layers—such as a hat, face mask, and gloves. Homeowners are encouraged to either wrap their pipes, drain them, or let them drip slowly to prevent freezing. Pet owners are urged to keep animals indoors as much as possible. Additionally, the community is reminded to keep a watchful eye on the most vulnerable among us, such as young children, the elderly, and the homeless, ensuring that any portable heaters are used safely and grills or generators are not operated inside dwellings.
The public should heed these advisories seriously and act promptly. Detailed forecasts for the Jacksonville area, as well as additional safety tips, can be found at the National Weather Service's website.
