Nelson Mandela’s story is set to anchor Dallas’ World Cup summer, as the African American Museum, Dallas opens Mandela: The Official Exhibition on June 13, 2026. The multi-gallery presentation will stay on view through November 1, 2026, offering a large-scale look at Mandela’s life and legacy just as Fair Park becomes a global magnet.
What to expect inside the galleries
The museum plans to fill all four of its galleries with the exhibition, with one space turned into a fully immersive multimedia environment that drops visitors into defining chapters of Mandela’s life. Guests will see rarely shown films, photographs and personal artifacts on loan from the Mandela family and archives around the world.
In a statement to CultureMap Dallas, African American Museum president and CEO Lisa Brown Ross said, “This exhibition tells the full arc of his life,” and the multilayered multimedia design lines up with the project described by the Nelson Mandela Foundation.
Why the timing matters
The dates are no coincidence. The 2026 FIFA World Cup runs June 11 to July 19, and Fair Park will host the official FIFA Fan Festival during the tournament, according to DallasFWC26. The Fan Festival is set to feature free match screenings, live music and cultural programming for visitors from around the world.
Just down the road in Arlington, officials confirm that AT&T Stadium will stage nine World Cup matches, including a semifinal, the most of any venue, per the City of Arlington.
A touring show with a global pedigree
Mandela: The Official Exhibition has already done the rounds internationally and at major U.S. institutions. The Henry Ford hosted the exhibition in a 2023 to 2024 run, highlighting its mix of historical material and immersive elements.
The show’s producers and partners, including Round Room Live and the Royal House of Mandela, are listed on the exhibition’s official site, which also details the blend of artifacts, film and large-scale projection that shape the experience. See The Henry Ford and Mandela Exhibition for background.
