In a gesture that cements the importance of public service and community dedication, Fairfield County Commissioners have declared November 29 as "Mel Meloy Day" honoring the original 9-1-1 Coordinator for Fairfield County, Millard "Mel" Meloy. The presentation of the Proclamation was made by Commissioner Steve Davis and was accepted by Detective Sergeant Shaun Meloy on behalf of the Meloy family, as stated in a social media post from the Fairfield County Sheriff's Office.
With a career that spans numerous decades, Mel, a 1976 Bloom Carroll High School graduate, embarked on a professional journey devoted to the betterment of public infrastructure. After retirement from the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office, his roles included Communications Supervisor and 9-1-1 Coordinator. While working as the Communications Supervisor, the honor recognizes Meloy for the integral part he played in building and refining emergency communications systems during a critical evolution period.
Meloy’s influence reached well beyond the boundaries of Fairfield County. His presidency of the Ohio chapter of the National Emergency Number Association (NENA) and active involvement in APCO are testaments to his commitment, along with his achievement of the Emergency Number Professional (ENP) certification. Not just confined to emergency communications, Mel's service stretched into the political realm as a past member of the Lithopolis Village Council.
The transition to Next Generation 9-1-1 systems in Fairfield County makes this moment of honoring haunt us with a sense of gratitude for those like Meloy who paved the way. "It is especially meaningful to honor those whose vision and service laid the foundation for this progress," according to Fairfield County Sheriff's Office, Sheriff Alex Lape reflected in a fitting tribute. November 29 will forever mark a day dedicated to Meloy's lasting contributions to Fairfield County's public safety landscape.
