
An apartment fire in Astoria, Queens, has claimed the life of an elderly woman and left another in critical condition. According to ABC7 New York, the blaze broke out on the third floor of a building on 35th Street just after 10:50 p.m. last night.
Tragically found unconscious and unresponsive by the firefighters, a nonagenarian was rushed to Mount Sinai Queens where she was pronounced dead, ABC7 New York further reported. Locked in a fierce battle against the flames, the firefighters and EMS who arrived at the scene discovered the women endangered by the inferno.
A 61-year-old woman, also afflicted by the devastating fire, was taken in critical condition to Jacobi Hospital in The Bronx. Reporting on the incident, QNS revealed that a total of 79 firefighters and EMS personnel were dispatched as part of 21 units to the location at 31-10 35th St.
The fire, which was announced as under control by the FDNY at 11:30 p.m., according to QNS, resulted in an outpouring emergency response between Broadway and 31st Avenue. Still grappling with the aftermath of the night's events, FDNY fire marshals are working to determine the cause of the blaze, as the community awaits the Medical Examiner's determination of the elderly victim's cause of death.
