The Kona Community Policing Section/HI-PAL is joining pointers with PATH and Bike Works Kona to host a free, family-friendly Kona Bicycle Day. Slated for Saturday, Jan. 24, bike enthusiasts and neophytes alike can convene on Aliʻi Drive between Likana Lane and Hualālai Road from 8 a.m. to noon, as per the Hawaiʻi Police Department.

The day’s agenda includes a full slate of bicycle safety and education activities, though organizers expect the obstacle course to be the main attraction. Designed to be both engaging and instructional, the course aims to reinforce safe riding habits in a hands-on way. Participants are required to bring a helmet; those without one will be limited to observing.

Those without a bicycle can still take part. According to the Hawaiʻi Police Department, bicycles will be available on-site for public use, making the event accessible to both regular riders and casual participants.

Organizers emphasize the event is more than a children’s activity, framing it as a broader effort to promote community wellness and encourage the use of active transportation. While initiatives like this often balance education and entertainment, Kona’s latest program appears to achieve both. Those interested in participating in the obstacle course are advised to contact Officer Leonard Warren at [email protected] to obtain the required waiver forms.
