The National Weather Service in Jacksonville has issued a Freeze Warning for Northeast and Northern Florida from Thursday night to Friday morning. Temperatures in the region are expected to drop to the mid-20s to around 30°F, with some areas reaching as low as 25°F under a Cold Weather Advisory.
The NWS advises extra precautions during the cold snap, especially for tender plants and outdoor pets. People are encouraged to wear warm clothing, including hats and gloves. Special care should be given to young children, the elderly, and the homeless, who are more at risk of hypothermia.
Pet owners are advised to keep animals indoors when possible and provide warm, dry shelters. The NWS recommends preventing outdoor water sources from freezing and protecting exposed pipes by wrapping, draining, or allowing them to drip slowly. Regular checks on older family members, friends, and neighbors are also recommended due to the cold.
Residents are advised to use heating devices safely to prevent fire hazards. Generators or grills should not be used indoors because of the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. After Friday, temperatures in Jacksonville are expected to rise, with mostly sunny days and highs near 60°F by Wednesday.
