In an impressive display of quick-thinking and camaraderie, staff members at Frontier Middle School in the Bethel School District became unexpected heroes after saving a colleague's life last December. According to a report from the Pierce County Sheriff's Office Blotter, a teacher who collapsed and ceased breathing was resuscitated thanks to the swift actions of her fellow educators.
On that critical day, Rick Ingham, Chari Wright, and Angel Pompa were by the teacher's side in a heartbeat providing life-saving CPR while the rest of the team activated additional support systems Kortnie Kanton made the essential 911 call, while Amy Wingerter and Melissa Pace notified the front office, and Karen Arteaga fetched the AED which was then used to keep the teacher stable until the arrival of Central Pierce Fire.
Alignment of training, will, and spirit inhabited the actions of these staff members—staff the school is "incredibly proud" of, as articulated by the school district in a heartfelt acknowledgement of their "professionalism, courage, and commitment to the safety of our school community."
The teacher, whose privacy is being preserved, was rushed to the hospital, where a nurse confirmed the decisive nature of the Frontier Middle School staff's actions, saying they undoubtedly saved her life, a sentiment echoed by the Sheriff’s Office, which expressed assurance in the school's ability to handle such grave emergencies even before the arrival of first responders. The efficacy of the team's response illuminates not only the depth of their dedication but also the importance of emergency preparedness in school settings.
It's events like these—often occurring beyond the reach of daily expectation—that remind us of the vital role educators play beyond teaching; they are caretakers, guardians, and sometimes, the very difference between life and death.
