The city's Parks and Recreation Department invites locals to join the Zig-Zaggers Dance program at Powell Drive Park. This dance group caters to all levels, offering courses in Round Dance for beginners and advanced Square Dance for experienced dancers.
The City of Raleigh describes the beginner offering as "Round dancing uses international ballroom dance steps," with participants learning various routines that can help foster coordination and rhythm, no previous experience necessary. However, to revel in this form of partnership dancing, the presence, and coordination of a partner is most preferred.
For those who have already achieved a certain finesse and prowess in dance, the advanced level Square Dance is where seasoned individuals can showcase their skills. The Zig-Zaggers are a niche assembly—requiring a completion of the A2 level, they're a group that thrives on the challenge of intricate footwork and synchronization to the rhythms dictated by a variety of national and international callers.
Interested parties can mark their calendars for Wednesdays at Powell Drive Park, with dances scheduled from 6 to 7 p.m. for beginners, and 7 to 9 p.m. for the advanced troupe. There's a nominal monthly fee of $5 starting March; however, enthusiasts can enjoy free sessions throughout January and February. Dancers aged 13 and above are welcome to join the fray. While drop-ins are appreciated, it's wise to confirm ahead of time, for the sake of ensuring a partner is available and that the class is still running as planned.
