Big news for tech enthusiasts and students across New York State—Governor Kathy Hochul has announced plans to more deeply integrate artificial intelligence into the SUNY system. Through an initiative called Empire AI, a partnership is being formed across SUNY campuses to expand AI research and education, with a focus on public-interest applications.

In a news release from the Governor’s Office, it was stated that SUNY’s four university centers will partner with several other SUNY schools, supported by the Empire AI supercomputer based at SUNY Buffalo. The initiative will provide students with new research opportunities and access to microcredential courses, with an emphasis on responsible and ethical use of artificial intelligence.

SUNY Chancellor John B. King Jr. said in a statement to the Governor’s Office, “Governor Hochul’s continued leadership has placed SUNY and New York State at the forefront of harnessing AI for the public good.” The SUNY Board of Trustees also acknowledged the Governor and State Legislature for expanding access to artificial intelligence technology.

As part of the initiative, the University at Albany is partnering with institutions such as SUNY Oneonta and Hudson Valley Community College to expand AI education and develop applied research projects. In Buffalo, an “AI in Action” initiative includes 11 campuses across Central and Western New York, offering workshops focused on curriculum development and ethical AI use. Stony Brook University is also collaborating with other campuses on an eight-week research program involving multiple academic disciplines.

The Empire AI partnership includes more than $500 million in combined public and private funding. Announced last year, Empire AI includes plans to expand computing capacity through projects such as Empire AI Beta. In addition, Binghamton University received a $30 million gift to establish the Center for AI Responsibility and Research, along with a $25 million research capital investment from SUNY.
