Governor Jared Polis has made a significant appointment to the Arapahoe County Court, naming Kathleen M. Tierney as the newest member of the bench. As reported by the Colorado Governor's Office, Tierney will step into her new role on February 16, 2026, filling the gap left by the Honorable Michael J. Roche upon his retirement.
Positioned since 2024 as a Senior/Assistant Chief Deputy District Attorney in the 18th Judicial District, Tierney's experience primarily lies within the realm of criminal prosecution. Having previously served as a Deputy District Attorney, both in the 18th and the 2nd Judicial Districts, her path to the bench has been laid with a steadfast commitment to the legal process. Holding a B.A. from the University of Scranton, Tierney earned her J.D. from Penn State Dickinson Law, sharpening skills that are anticipated to serve her well in judicial robes.
The Governor's choice has been the talk of legal circuits, with Tierney's peers reflecting on her track record with respect. Having focused on criminal prosecution throughout her career, it's expected that she brings a wealth of knowledge and a nuanced understanding of the law to her judgeship. Her former roles, building from a solid base as a Deputy District Attorney, have shaped her perspective and approach to justice, a perspective now set to influence the Arapahoe County Court.
