A New Year's Eve celebration at a north Houston short-term rental exploded into chaos early today when gunfire erupted inside the crowded house, leaving five people wounded and sending hundreds of partygoers scrambling into the street. One man was critically injured and rushed to Ben Taub Hospital, while other victims were treated at the scene or showed up at area hospitals on their own.
Police response and victim conditions
Houston police say officers were called around 2:45 a.m. to the 800 block of Yorkshire Street for a disturbance at the rental. When officers arrived, they found a man with a gunshot wound to the chest and started CPR before he was taken to Ben Taub. A woman was driven to a hospital in a private vehicle, and another victim with a graze wound was treated on scene, while two more people later walked into local hospitals with gunshot injuries, bringing the total to five. According to Click2Houston, most of the victims are reported to be in stable condition, with the man shot in the chest listed as critical.
Scene, crowd, and suspect description
A Houston Police captain at the scene said the house was packed, with roughly 300 people inside when shots were fired, and multiple people were seen running as officers pulled up. Investigators said they have a brief description of a possible suspect, described as a man with short dreads, and are reviewing nearby surveillance and Ring doorbell footage as they work to identify him, per FOX 26. No arrests had been reported as of the morning.
Two party shootings in one night, and a regulatory backdrop
The northside shooting came on the heels of another New Year’s gathering in the Third Ward, where Houston police say five people were also shot at a short-term rental earlier in the night. Together, the two parties left at least seven people injured and stretched investigators across the city.
The violence landed just as Houston’s short-term rental registration rules took effect today, creating new guest and host requirements and barring owners from advertising homes as event spaces, according to the City of Houston. Officials have said the regulatory changes are intended in part to crack down on large, unmanaged gatherings at rental properties.
How to help
Police are urging anyone with information, photos, or video from the area to come forward. Investigators ask that tips be reported to HPD Major Assaults at 713-308-8800 or to Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS (8477), per FOX 26. The shooting remains under active investigation as officers continue to review footage and interview witnesses.
