A quiet late night on San Antonio’s West Side turned chaotic Monday when a man standing in his own driveway was struck in the stomach by a ricocheting bullet during a suspected drive-by shooting, police said. The gunfire erupted just before midnight in the 100 block of Segura Street near Old Highway 90, after someone in a dark-colored car allegedly rolled past and opened fire. The victim was rushed to a hospital and is expected to recover, and officers said no arrests had been made as of early Tuesday.
According to WOAI, the man was under his carport when a bullet ricocheted off a vehicle and struck him in the stomach. The suspect vehicle sped away before officers arrived, and police marked shell casings while investigating how a stray shot hit the victim.
KSAT noted the shooting was reported around 11:50 p.m. in the same 100 block of Segura Street and said police indicated the bullet did not actually penetrate the man’s skin. KSAT reported the victim, believed to be in his 40s, was taken to the hospital as a precaution while detectives canvassed the block and spoke with neighbors, looking for anyone who might have seen the dark-colored car or caught it on camera.
Ricochets Can Be Deadly
When a bullet hits a hard surface, it can spin off in a new direction with very little warning, which is exactly what officials warn about when they talk about stray gunfire. The City of San Antonio stresses that falling or ricocheting rounds can still carry enough force to seriously injure or kill someone who is nowhere near the original target, and urges residents who hear or see gunfire to contact law enforcement rather than shrug it off.
Investigators Seek Witnesses
Police had not announced any arrests and said the investigation remains active, according to WOAI. Officers were documented photographing the scene, gathering shell casings, and talking with nearby residents while detectives worked to track down leads on the suspected drive-by.
Recent West Side Incidents
This latest scare lands on a West Side that has already seen recent bloodshed. On January 14, a shooting along U.S. Highway 90 left three people hospitalized, according to KSAT. Local law enforcement has pointed to cases like that and the Segura Street attack as examples of why they say curbing gun violence in the area remains an ongoing priority.
Anyone with information about the Segura Street shooting is urged to contact SAPD. The City of San Antonio lists the department’s non-emergency line for reporting gunfire and tips at 210-207-7273. Investigators say even small details from witnesses can help move the case forward, and officials have said they will release more information as it becomes available.
