In a bizarre incident early Friday morning in Harmar Township, a man was accused of firing shots at several homes before setting his own house ablaze. David John Benec, 65, now faces charges including arson and recklessly endangering another person, as CBS News Pittsburgh reported.
Police arrived around 4 a.m. to find Benec's home with heavy fire damage and bullet holes in the windows. Claiming he was pursued by vampires, Benec resorted to shooting out his home's windows and eventually setting it on fire. Running toward another home on Ridge Avenue, Benec raised the alarm for neighbors who were sleeping, according to TribLIVE. Police also found a fully loaded .45 caliber magazine in Benec's possession, and a 12-gauge rifle.
One neighbor, Chris Fugate, reported to police that Benec was inside his house, allegedly yelling about vampires. Fugate and his wife, along with four boys, were at home when they went out to gunfire. A good neighbor for over a decade, the incident left Fugate and his family disturbed, entailing a series of bullet holes on the side of their home as CBS News Pittsburgh captured.
While no injuries were reported, the damage was extensive.
