What started as a routine New Year’s Eve patrol in the Kenswick Drive area of Humble ended with two Harris County Constable deputies hurt and a pair of damaged cruisers, after a driver allegedly hit one patrol vehicle, took off, and later collided with another. The suspect was taken into custody, and medics checked both deputies at the scene. One deputy was transported to a hospital for further evaluation, while the other was treated on site. Officials said two constable patrol cars were damaged, and the investigation remains active.
How the chase unfolded
According to FOX 26 Houston, the Precinct 4 Constable's Office said the incident began on Kenswick Drive just north of FM 1960, when a driver struck a patrol vehicle and fled, prompting deputies to give chase. FOX 26 reported that during the pursuit, the driver struck two deputies before crashing into a second patrol car, at which point the suspect was taken into custody.
Photos show damage and response
Images shared by Constable Mark Herman's office and cited by ABC13 Houston show significant front-end damage to a patrol SUV and another vehicle. ABC13 Houston also reports that both injured deputies were treated at the scene, with one later transported to the hospital. Herman's office has not released the names of the deputies or the suspect.
Pursuit policy scrutiny
The crash lands squarely in the middle of an ongoing debate over how aggressively Precinct 4 deputies should chase fleeing drivers. A Houston Landing investigation found the precinct has initiated numerous high-speed chases in recent years, many beginning with minor violations, and warned that such pursuits carry serious safety risks. Experts quoted by Houston Landing have urged tighter pursuit rules that would reserve chases for violent crimes or clear, imminent threats instead of low-level traffic offenses.
Investigation ongoing
Herman's office told local outlets the case remains under investigation and that more information will be released when available, according to ABC13 Houston. Authorities did not immediately say whether the suspect will face additional charges related to the deputies’ injuries.
