Last night, a close call on the ice turned into a rescue operation at Fairfield Beach Park. According to an unofficial post by the Walnut Township Fire Department unofficial on their Facebook page, an ice fisherman experienced a medical emergency due to carbon monoxide poisoning. The department's units were dispatched, and the situation required upgraded response to a "Tech Rescue: Ice" run, leading to the mobilization of additional trucks and personnel from multiple agencies.
The victim, reportedly overcome by Carbon Monoxide from improper operation and venting of a heater in his Ice Shantee, was fortunate enough to have communicated his location and expected return time to his wife. "Once crews assessed the scene and equipment arrived, 1 crew deployed for Recon, and another crew to aid in the rescue / retrieval of the patient and his belongings," the Walnut Township Fire Department's unofficial social media post stated. The fisherman was ultimately able to walk off the ice with the help of the rescue crews for further evaluation, signaling a positive resolution to what could have quickly become a tragic event.
The community's response was a testament to the collaborative efforts of local emergency services. The Walnut Township Fire Department extended its thanks to their mutual aid partners for the support, including the Basil Joint Fire District, Fairfield County Sheriff's Office, Fairfield County Special Operations Team, Thorn Township Fire & EMS, West Licking Fire District, and Violet Township Fire Department. They also issued an apology for any partners they may have inadvertently failed to acknowledge.
