A fire late last month forced the temporary closure of Shion 69 Leonard, a one-Michelin-star omakase restaurant in Manhattan, according to Tribeca Citizen. The fire occurred around 5 p.m. on December 27. The FDNY said no injuries were reported, though hazmat crews were involved during the cleanup. The restaurant is known for its Edomae-style sushi and has been led by Tokyo-trained executive chef Shion Uino since 2021.
Shion 69 Leonard’s reopening timeline remains unclear. Its reservations page currently shows no availability, and chef Uino, who was previously expected to step away from the restaurant at the end of 2025, has not announced specific future plans. However, Eater reported that Uino said on Instagram he would share updates about his 2026 activities soon. The restaurant operates at 69 Leonard Street, a space that previously housed Shoji.
