A disturbing series of events surrounding the deaths of an Ohio couple has come to light following the release of court documents. Spencer and Monique Tepe were found shot to death in their Columbus home on December 30, and the suspect in the case is Monique's ex-husband, an Illinois surgeon named Michael McKee. McKee has been charged with four counts of aggravated murder and one count of aggravated burglary after being extradited to Franklin County Jail in Ohio, as reported by WLWT.
According to details obtained by ABC News, McKee is alleged to have made threats against Monique, with a witness telling detectives that McKee had said he "could kill her at any time" and "would find her and buy the house right next to her." The documents also shed light on McKee's unsettling proclamation that "she will always be his wife." These allegations paint a grim picture of the couple's history, as Monique's friends and family also described McKee as abusive, and claimed he had made numerous threats on her life during and after their marriage. The situation was further complicated as security video captured McKee visiting the Tepes' Columbus home on December 6, the same day the couple was attending the Big Ten Championship game in Indiana, thus providing no alibi for the accused.
Diane Menashe, the defense attorney for McKee, waived a request for bond and entered not guilty pleas on his behalf. This legal action followed the gathering of more evidence by police, who linked McKee to a car seen on surveillance and his phone, which was left at his workplace with "no activity for approximately 17 hours" during the time of the homicides, as stated in the court documents referenced by ABC News. Spencer and Monique Tepe were hailed as "extraordinary people whose lives were filled with love, joy and deep connection to others" by their family members. The couple had two young children who were home at the time but left unharmed, as was the family dog.
The personal history between McKee and Monique is being scrutinized, with additional court documents revealing previous abuse allegations, including forced unwanted sex and strangulation. In an article by 13WHAM, one witness told detectives about the abuse Monique Tepe had reportedly suffered. During a trip when Monique became upset and left a football game early, Spencer Tepe reportedly informed friends that the reason was something involving her ex-husband. The Tepes were deeply involved in their community, with Spencer being a member of the American Dental Association and a graduate of Ohio State University. They were remembered fondly for their contributions and vibrant spirit.
