The grim reality of life behind bars has once again been thrust into the spotlight following the announcement of an inmate's death at the North Branch Correctional Institution in Allegany County, Maryland, as reported by the Maryland State Police on their official website. The deceased, identified as 51-year-old Larry Horton, was an inmate serving time at the maximum-security prison located in Cumberland, Maryland.
According to the report provided by Maryland State Police, Horton was found unresponsive in his cell last Saturday shortly before midnight and was pronounced dead by medical personnel at the scene. The cause and manner of death remain under investigation and will be determined following an autopsy to be conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore, at which time clarity is expected regarding the circumstances of Horton’s death.
Investigative leads have pointed to a suspect, an unnamed individual who is also an inmate at the facility, but formal identification and charges are yet to be announced pending further investigative developments. Responding to the incident, the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit was notified by counterparts from the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Internal Investigative Unit (DPSCS IID), reflecting a layered approach to uncovering the harrowing truths that lay guarded behind the prison's walls.
Crime scene technicians from the Maryland State Police Forensic Sciences Division were observed processing the scene for evidence. As the investigation continues, all findings will be submitted to the Allegany County State’s Attorney’s Office for review, where the evidence will be evaluated to determine the appropriate course of action and ensure a full and accurate account of the facts.
