The National Weather Service in Jacksonville, Florida, has issued a Freeze Warning from 9 p.m. this evening through 9 a.m. EST Monday, with temperatures forecast to drop as low as 26 degrees. A Cold Weather Advisory will also be in effect from 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. EST Monday, as wind chill values are expected to fall to around 22 degrees. The advisory notes that these conditions may increase the risk of cold-related health effects, particularly for vulnerable groups including young children, older adults, and individuals without shelter.
In response to the weather alerts, authorities have advised residents to take precautions against the cold. The NWS recommends using caution when outdoors and wearing appropriate clothing, including hats and gloves. Advisories also encourage keeping pets indoors when possible and protecting sensitive plants from freezing temperatures. Residents are further advised to check on older family members and neighbors during the cold conditions.
The cold conditions are expected to affect much of northeast and north-central Florida. The warnings also emphasize proper use of portable heaters and advise against operating generators or grills indoors. The alerts note that low temperatures and wind chill values may increase the risk of hypothermia with prolonged exposure.
Conditions are forecast to become milder after Monday’s freeze. Frost may occur in some areas before 9 a.m. on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, followed by sunny skies and a high near 54. Temperatures are expected to gradually warm through the week, reaching a high near 74 by next Saturday. The NWS forecast also indicates periodic chances of showers and cloudy nights during the coming days.
