The City of Janesville is prepared for winter weather and has plows and salt trucks ready to keep roads safe. Crews respond based on weather conditions and maintain more than 350 miles of city streets, according to the City of Janesville news release.
Plowing usually begins when snowfall reaches two to three inches, but warmer temperatures may lead the city to salt roads instead of plowing. When plowing is needed, 29 operators cover 15 routes, focusing first on main roads, bus routes, and high-traffic areas. During ongoing snowstorms, crews repeatedly clear major roads before moving into residential neighborhoods once the snow stops. Residential streets are plowed in at least two passes to push snow from the center to the curb, as reported by the City of Janesville.
Residents are advised to wait until plowing is complete before clearing driveways, as snow may be pushed back across driveway entrances. While residential streets are not routinely salted, intersections may receive salt if conditions require it. Cul-de-sacs receive several center passes followed by a final curb pass to evenly distribute snow. For updates during snow events, residents can visit the City’s Snow & Ice Control webpage, call the Snow Hotline at (608) 755-SNOW, or contact the City Services Center at (608) 755-3110, as per the City of Janesville.
