An eviction call at a southeast Las Vegas apartment turned violent on Tuesday morning when a deputy constable shot a man after the deputy and a maintenance worker were attacked with a machete. The clash unfolded in the 6600 block of South Sandhill Road and left the constable with injuries described as non-life-threatening. All three people involved were taken to area hospitals. It was the second officer-involved shooting reported in the valley that morning.
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police said the call came in just after 9 a.m., and Capt. Ryan Wiggins told reporters the deputy was serving an eviction when the confrontation began, according to News 3 Las Vegas. Metro officers later responded to secure the scene and provide medical aid.
Channel 13's reporting fills in more of the chaos inside the unit. The deputy and a maintenance worker entered the apartment together and were confronted by a person armed with a machete. During the struggle, the deputy fired and hit the suspect, KTNV reported. KTNV said all three were transported to hospitals and that the suspect's condition had not yet been released.
Metro's official X post, captured by FOX 5 Las Vegas, warned the public to avoid the area and listed the agency's event number and time of call. Local outlets noted the department identified the encounter as the second officer-involved shooting of the morning.
How Constables Fit Into Local Law Enforcement
Clark County's Office of the Ex-Officio Constable is responsible for serving civil process, including evictions, and operates under LVMPD's direction, according to the county website. That structure means deputy constables often coordinate with Metro when a seemingly routine civil call suddenly becomes a safety problem.
Investigation And Next Steps
LVMPD press releases for past officer-involved shootings show the department's Force Investigation Team handles those probes and that, per department practice, the identities of involved officers are typically withheld for 48 hours while investigations are active. After the Force Investigation Team completes its work, the case materials are forwarded for further review, and the department asks anyone with information to contact the Force Investigation Team, according to the LVMPD.
Officials have not released any charges or an update on the suspect's condition. Authorities asked the public to stay away from the Sandhill and Sunset area while investigators cleared the scene and collected evidence, as per FOX 5 Las Vegas. This is a developing story and will be updated as Metro, hospital or prosecutor statements become available.
