In a recent incident underscoring the increasing utility of drones in public safety operations, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) utilized one of its aerial devices to swiftly locate a missing 8-year-old child. The LVMPD took to social media to announce the successful deployment of their Drone as a First Responder (DFR) team in the critical search-and-rescue mission. A distress call was made by a family whose son had been missing for over an hour, sparking an urgent response coordinated between the DFR team and patrol officers on the ground.
The family had searched alongside patrol officers, grappling with the distress that accompanies a child's unexpected disappearance. It was shared by the relatives with the LVMPD that this was an unprecedented event for the young boy, who had no history of running away. The DFR team, promptly responding, managed to effectively employ their drone to scan the area and ultimately spot the missing child. The ability to quickly deploy and communicate real-time data demonstrates a powerful tool in law enforcement's repertoire to quickly locate individuals in times of need.
According to the LVMPD's Facebook post, "The DFR pilot relayed real-time information to patrol officers on the ground, guiding them directly to his location." This crucial exchange of information between the drone pilot and the officers enabled a swift reunion between the child and his concerned parents.
