The leadership of Harford County Public Schools is undergoing significant change, as Aaron Poynton has stepped down from his position as the President of the Board of Education, following closely behind Superintendent Sean Bulson's placement on administrative leave. According to statements obtained by FOX Baltimore, Poynton cited "personal and professional commitments" as the reason for his abrupt departure, and not the current turbulence within the school board. Poynton mentioned starting a new role as CEO that will "require my full-time attention and frequent extended travel outside of Harford County," rendering him unable to maintain the level of commitment his board role necessitates.
Poynton's resignation came less than 24 hours after a board meeting he led, which resulted in a vote to place Superintendent Bulson on paid leave. This administrative shake-up occurred in the wake of a theft reported by Bulson in New Orleans, an incident that has sparked recent social media attention and caused distraction for the school system. The theft incident, where Bulson was reportedly robbed in a hotel room during a work conference back in 2024, was brought back into focus, potentially impacting school property.
In a message to HCPS parents and guardians, Poynton expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to have served, emphasizing his resignation was not connected to these challenges. "It has been an honor and a privilege to serve the students, staff, and communities of Harford County," Poynton stated in his message, further detailed in a FOX Baltimore report.
As for Bulson's situation, it remains to some extent clouded in uncertainty. It is not clear what will happen next for the now-on-leave superintendent, or who will permanently assume Poynton's former role. Currently, Lauren Paige holds the position of Vice President of the board. Poynton has also been reported by WMAR-2 News to extend his support to the school district from a distance, conveying a wish for continued success in the board's future endeavors.
