A social-media-organized car meet on the 7500 block of NW Loop 410 near Military Drive did not last long on Sunday, after San Antonio police rolled up on roughly 30 vehicles gathered on the frontage road. Officers arrested 11 people at the scene, impounded 15 cars and later recovered a stolen vehicle as part of the sweep. The crackdown followed videos of the meet that were shared online, and authorities say the investigation is ongoing.
Police Say Attendees Face Multiple Charges
Police say attendees were cited or arrested on offenses including reckless driving, child endangerment and driving without a license, with additional citations for operating with an invalid license, as reported by KENS 5. The arrestees ranged in age from 16 to 46, the department said, and detectives have identified a suspect connected to an unauthorized-use-of-a-motor-vehicle case. Officers described the scene as dangerous because of high speeds and risky driving on a busy stretch of highway.
Past Meets Have Sometimes Turned Violent
Informal car meets and street takeovers in San Antonio have previously escalated to violence or serious crashes; in 2023 a man was fatally shot at a Westside car club meet, according to reporting by the San Antonio Express-News. That episode prompted stepped-up patrols near known meetup spots and renewed warnings from traffic-safety advocates about gatherings that spill onto public roadways. Community concern over safety at impromptu street events has been a recurring theme in city discussions about enforcement and prevention.
Investigation and Vehicle Holds
SAPD said officers were first alerted to videos of the gathering on December 28 and found about 30 vehicles when they arrived; 15 vehicles were impounded and 11 people were arrested, police told KENS 5. Authorities recovered one stolen vehicle during the operation and said detectives are following up on leads tied to unauthorized-use allegations. The department encouraged anyone with footage or information to contact investigators as the probe continues.
