A Los Angeles man has been charged with murder following a fatal fentanyl overdose that occurred in Thousand Oaks back in 2023. Thomas James Syslo from Torrance faces serious allegations including second-degree murder, possession for sale of a controlled substance, and two counts of money laundering. The Ventura County District Attorney's Office announced these charges on January 27, 2026, following Syslo's plea of not guilty during his initial court appearance.
According to the press release issued by the Ventura County District Attorney's Office, the unfortunate incident unfolded on August 4, 2023, when deputies found the victim, Freddy Dijor, at a hotel. Despite efforts by fire department personnel and EMS responders, Dijor was pronounced dead at the scene. Subsequent investigations linked Syslo to the death, revealing that Dijor succumbed to the combined toxic effects of fentanyl, gabapentin, and diphenhydramine. Syslo's arrest near his Torrance residence on January 22, 2026, by the Ventura County Fentanyl and Overdose Crimes Units (VC FOCUS) marked the culmination of a thorough investigation into his alleged criminal activities.
In a statement obtained by the Ventura County District Attorney's Office, District Attorney Erik Nasarenko highlighted the severity of the situation, saying, "This case underscores the deadly consequences of fentanyl trafficking and the lengths some dealers will go to conceal their profits." The press release details a disturbing operation wherein detectives seized 28 gross grams of fentanyl meant for sale, more than $12,000 in cash, and 383 professional-grade Pokémon cards worth around $130,000 during a raid at Syslo's home. These findings contributed to the allegations of money laundering against Syslo, suggesting a calculated scheme to wash the proceeds from his narcotic sales through the trading of high-value collectibles.
The efforts of VC FOCUS stand at the front line against the fentanyl crisis in Ventura County, combining resources from different agencies to disrupt the drug supply chain and address the epidemic's impact on the community. Fentanyl's lethal reputation is well-founded, given its potency and the incredibly small dosage required for a fatal outcome. Through initiatives like ThinkAgainVC.com, the task force aims to provide vital information and assistance to individuals grappling with addiction and to the general public.
As proceedings continue, Syslo awaits his next court event, set for a bail review hearing on January 28, 2026. His bail currently stands at $1 million. With the case number 2026001959, the charges against Syslo carry not only the weight of the law but also the grim reminder of the human cost tied to the drug trafficking world.
