Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has made headlines again by renewing the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the City of Los Angeles and Enterprise Singapore to foster jobs, innovation, and investment, capitalizing on previously seen growth. In a move poised to enhance the city's global economic stature, this partnership continues from a successful period that saw a surge in Singaporean company presence and job creation in LA County. A detailed overview of the agreement is available here.
The new MOU, building on the 2022-2025 agreement, aims to reinforce the bilateral synergy that boosted employment by 135 percent within Singaporean companies based in the region, alongside an 84 percent increase in their local operations, reflecting the promise of sustainable economic ties. In a statistical testament to the partnership's success, Singapore climbed the ranks to become the 16th largest source of foreign direct investment in LA County, and maintained its position as the leading ASEAN investor in the city.
Highlighting the strategic nature of the renewed collaboration, Mayor Bass stated, "Renewing this partnership builds on real results and it positions Los Angeles to continue leading on innovation, sustainability, and global trade," according to a press release. The agreement emphasizes engagement across high-growth sectors which are pivotal to both cities' economic future. Reinforcing this, Mr. Lee Chuan Teck of Enterprise Singapore noted the commitment to amplifying concerted efforts in areas such as advanced manufacturing and the green economy.
Under the MOU, Los Angeles and Enterprise Singapore have delineated priority areas for cooperation including advanced manufacturing, life sciences, and supply chains with a particular focus on the establishment of the LA-Long Beach-Singapore Green and Digital Shipping Corridor, which stands as an exemplar of their shared adherence to climate action and sustainable logistics. The multi-agency collaboration required to execute this plan will be shepherded by the Mayor's Office of International Affairs and will draw upon the resources of city, state, and regional partners in synergy with Enterprise Singapore's network.
This pact is a strategic chess move with the City aiming to assert itself as a global powerhouse ahead of hosting major international events like the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. By harnessing international relations and bolstering innovation, Mayor Bass and her administration intend to ensure that these grand-scale events yield a lasting economic and environmental boon for Los Angeles residents, as echoed in the principles of the agreement.
