In the heart of Los Angeles, a collaborative fight against sex trafficking is gaining new ground along Western Avenue, where a coalition led by City Attorney Hydee Feldstein Soto and County District Attorney Nathan Hochman has announced an expanded anti-trafficking initiative, joining forces with the LAPD and nonprofit Journey Out in a strategic move to dismantle the hub of such bleak trade in human despair.
This determined effort, unrolled amidst National Human Trafficking Prevention Month, aims at supporting survivors and bringing swift justice to traffickers and their clientele, with Western Avenue near Koreatown and the Greater Wilshire area being a longstanding concern for its illicit undertakings; DA Hochman reiterated the three-pronged approach they are taking, "prosecuting human traffickers/pimps to attack the supply side, prosecuting sexual exploiters/Johns to reduce the demand side, and offering rehabilitative services for sex workers to end their victimization," as said in a statement picked up by cityattorney.lacity.gov.
Nayeli May, the Executive Director of Journey Out, stressed the importance of providing compassionate and sensitive assistance to survivors of human trafficking, and formally indicated the need for a concerted effort among city agencies to deliver the requisite aid. The Los Angeles Police Department, represented by Captain Rachel Rodriguez, has solidified their resolve to aid in the prevention of trafficking, emphasizing ongoing operations in the West Bureau to prioritize victim rescue and detain traffickers.
As part of the initiative's outreach, those in need can contact the National Human Trafficking Hotline for confidential, multilingual assistance available around the clock, details of which are available on the initiative's launch announcement; victims and witnesses are encouraged to reach out by calling 888-373-7888 or texting 233733, to find help in over 200 languages, the City Attorney's office announced. Hydee Feldstein Soto, taking office as Los Angeles's first female City Attorney, oversees an extensive team tasked with the city’s legal affairs, while DA Hochman, with his robust background in law, pledges to balance justice with rehabilitation for those caught in the cycle of crime driven by substance abuse or mental health issues.
