Daniel and Jacob Barrios, whose day of celebration at their mother's birthday party turned into a crisis response, were honored by South County Fire with a Community Lifesaver Coin after they intervened in an apartment fire at the Tameron Ranch complex, rescuing a dog and preventing the blaze from spreading further.
It was when the brothers heard an alarm and smelled smoke, they sprang into action, discovering a woman fleeing from her smoke-engulfed unit, and while ensuring her safety they quickly realized her dog was still trapped inside, exhibiting no hesitation, Daniel and Jacob entered the smoke-filled apartment rescued the dog and using a fire extinguisher, they managed to halt the fire from claiming more territory before firefighters arrived and completely doused the flames. In a post shared by South County Fire, the response team hailed their actions as "amazing," "noble," and "heroic."
Their courageous efforts didn't stop at battling the fire; Jacob Barrios took it upon himself to bridge the language gap between the firefighters and the residents, who spoke only Spanish, ensuring that the first responders had all the necessary information to handle the situation effectively. This thoughtful act of communication was pivotal in coordinating a successful response to the emergency at hand.
South County Firefighters shared their assessment of the incident, stating that the brothers' intervention was critical, because without their help, the fire very likely would have spread to adjacent units and possibly taken even more for its claim. In a heartfelt statement from South County Fire online, they expressed their gratitude: "On behalf of all of us at South County Fire: Thank you, Daniel and Jacob, for your courage and quick thinking!" Furthermore, the post included an essential safety tip, advising the public only to use fire extinguishers on small and contained fires, and emphasizing the importance of safe evacuation and calling 911 in more severe cases.
