Three masked intruders broke into the Los Angeles-area home of actor Troy Garity over the weekend while he was out of town, according to police, setting off an alarm and then bolting in a waiting car. As of the latest word from authorities, no arrests had been announced, and it was still unclear what, if anything, the crew managed to grab before taking off.
According to NBC Los Angeles, Los Angeles Police Department officials told NBC4 Investigates that three people wearing ski masks and gloves slipped in through a rear glass sliding door at about 8 p.m. Saturday. Officers said the burglars were inside only briefly before fleeing in a getaway vehicle, and investigators began canvassing the neighborhood for security footage and witnesses. The station reported that it had reached out to Garity’s representative for comment.
Part of a wider pattern in L.A.
The break-in at Garity’s home is the latest in a run of cases tied to crews targeting vacant houses across the region for high-end loot, according to reporting by the Los Angeles Times. That coverage notes that police have warned some groups use travel schedules and social media posts to zero in on homes they believe will be empty, leaving celebrities and athletes especially vulnerable when they are on the road.
How burglars often gain entry
Security specialists say sliding glass doors are a favorite weak spot, since they can sometimes be lifted off their tracks or shattered for a fast in-and-out. ADT’s perimeter protection guidance recommends reinforcing those doors with a bar or pin, pairing them with glass-break sensors and cameras, and making sure motion-activated lights cover rear entries to slow intruders and boost the odds of spotting them. Those steps can also give neighbors and officers more to work with if a burglary does happen.
In Garity’s case, detectives have been canvassing nearby houses and reviewing any available surveillance as the investigation moves forward; NBC Los Angeles reported that no suspects had been taken into custody as of its most recent update. Investigators typically lean on resident tips and security video when trying to piece together what happened in residential break-ins.
Troy Garity, 52, is the son of Jane Fonda and the late activist Tom Hayden and has appeared in projects including HBO’s “Ballers” and the “Barbershop” films, according to IMDb. He has received award recognition for his work in both film and television.
