In an effort to reshape the interactions between New Yorkers and their city government, Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani has enacted an Executive Order to create the Mayor's Office of Mass Engagement (OME). Tasked with revolutionizing community engagement efforts across the city, the OME intends to forge new pathways for residents to voice their concerns and actively participate in policymaking. Tascha Van Auken, who demonstrated her mobilizing prowess during Mayor Mamdani's groundbreaking campaign, is set to lead the initiative as the newly appointed Commissioner.
The goal of the OME is clear: to ensure that every New Yorker, regardless of status or income, has their voice heard in the grand conversation of governance. As noted in the Executive Order, this approach seeks to reach "the masses of everyday New Yorkers" with a special focus on incorporating input from community organizations and faith-based groups, according to an announcement on the City of New York official website. Van Auken, brings a notable record of grassroots organization to her new role, including significant experience with the Working Families Party, enhancing voter turnout in a local mayoral race to levels not seen since 1969.
"For too long, city government has only listened to the wealthy and well-connected while working New Yorkers remain further and further disconnected from those elected to serve them," Mayor Mamdani stated as per the City of New York. Van Auken, echoing this sentiment, added, "We are all too familiar with wanting to participate in City government and not knowing where to go." These insights underline the perceived need for the OME's creation and its mission of "demystify government" to empower all New Yorkers as active participants.
The OME's mandate covers a broad spectrum of engagement strategies, including leading mass engagement campaigns, creating accessible events for public feedback, and consistently incorporating this feedback into policy decisions. It aims to shatter the barriers traditionally excluding many communities from political discourse and policy-making, as the Executive Order emphasizes proactive community outreach efforts. Fahd Ahmed, Executive Director at DRUM, noted the potential for the OME to foster "deep meaningful democracy" through participatory practices and collaborative strategies between the government and its citizens, according to the City of New York website.
As the overseeing entity for the Public Engagement Unit (PEU), the Mayor's Office of Faith-Based and Community Partnerships, and NYC Service, the Office of Mass Engagement is poised to become a centralized hub for civic engagement. With its immediate effectivity, the Office exemplifies the administration's urgency in changing the status quo and ensuring that the wheels of government turn with, and not just for, the people of New York City.
