Crews are repairing several water main breaks across Metro Detroit during a cold snap. CBS News reported two major breaks on Tuesday morning at Laing and Grayton streets and at State Fair Avenue and Dequindre Road, creating icy roads. City officials urged people to avoid the flooded areas for safety and to allow repairs.
A water main break on Barlow near 8 Mile and Groesbeck flooded part of an east side Detroit neighborhood, trapping vehicles including a Detroit police car, as noted by ClickOnDetroit. The cause of the break is currently unknown.
According to FOX 2 Detroit, the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department is handling "at least a couple dozen" water main breaks. DWSD director Gary Brown said, "This is historic, regionally, to have this deep of a freeze for this long of a period of time." Repairs are being prioritized for areas without water, no residents were reported without service. The Eastpointe Water Department was sent to fix a break on Juliana Avenue. Brown said, "When you've got 30 or 40 water main breaks, we can't get to everyone at the same time," and officials asked residents to be patient while crews work.
