In a recent push to bolster education in Michigan, the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) has outlined several legislative priorities for 2026, with special emphasis on literacy improvement and equitable school funding. Aligning with the state's Top 10 Strategic Education Plan, the MDE has communicated its agenda directly to the Michigan Legislature.

"If we want to put Students First and address the priority of improving student literacy, we must all work together on the same team," State Superintendent Dr. Glenn Maleyko stated in an announcement highlighted by the Department of Education. His vision of bipartisan collaboration extends from the legislature to Governor Gretchen Whitmer as the state seeks to focus on what's best for its children.

Key points on MDE's list include the expansion of the October 2024 literacy and dyslexia laws, with a proposal to make Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS) training mandatory for all elementary educators in Michigan. Funding for economically disadvantaged students, English learners, and those with disabilities takes a front seat, as well as support for early childhood education and pupil transportation.

The department is also pressing for protections for students in vulnerable situations, such as those experiencing homelessness or entangled in the juvenile justice system, to prevent educational disruption. In a commitment to holistic education, MDE emphasizes the establishment of summer programs that meld academic support with enrichment, alongside social and emotional development.

Technological advancement in education is another cornerstone of the MDE's priorities, urging for state guidance on the use of artificial intelligence in schools, as well as the creation of a statewide technology and innovation framework that provides hands-on learning opportunities. The MDE also addresses the Michigan School Meals program, advocating for codifying the initiative that supplies free breakfast and lunch to all public school students into law.

Finally, the MDE seeks legislative support to modernize policies related to the educator workforce, expand career and technical education opportunities, fund the Blue Ribbon Schools program, and amend the retirement system for educators to facilitate their move to the MDE without a loss of retirement funds. All of these efforts combined reflect the MDE's commitment to advancing education in a comprehensive, student-centered manner.
