Michigan residents are feeling a pinch at the pump, as gas prices have climbed by 15 cents in just one week, landing at an average of $2.96 per gallon for regular unleaded. This uptick is directly attributed to a surge in gasoline demand, which, according to the Energy Information Administration (EIA), saw an increase from 8.17 million barrels per day to 8.30 million barrels per day. UpperMISource reports that, compared to last month, Michigan drivers are now seeing prices that are 18 cents higher, yet these are still 19 cents lower than the same time last year.
Despite the rise, Michigan motorists are paying approximately $6 less for a full 15-gallon tank than the peak prices seen in August 2025, which were around $50. "Drivers across Michigan are seeing higher prices at the pump with some metro areas seeing gas prices above $3 a gallon," Adrienne Woodland, a spokeswoman for AAA, noted, as CBS News Detroit reports. The areas hit hardest by the price hike include Ann Arbor, Lansing, and Saginaw, where motorists are facing prices ranging from $3.01 to $3.03 per gallon.
In contrast, those looking for more favorable gas prices might head towards Traverse City, Marquette, or even look within Metro Detroit, where prices are pegged at $2.68, $2.74, and $2.92 per gallon, respectively. These figures underscore a varied price landscape across the state, as illustrated by the Detroit News. Nationally, the average cost for a gallon of regular unleaded gas holds at $2.82, exhibiting a slight increase from the previous week by 2 cents and a sharper fall of 30 cents compared to last year.
AAA suggests several approaches for Michigan drivers to mitigate the sting of recently increased fuel costs. Recommendations include combining errands to cut down driving time, price comparison when purchasing gas, paying with cash to avoid credit card surcharges, lightening vehicle loads, adopting a more conservative driving style to enhance fuel economy, and enrolling in savings programs, specifically mentioning that AAA members can save 5 cents per gallon at Shell stations. Amid the fluctuations in gas prices, these tips may lend some financial relief to drivers striving to manage their transportation costs effectively.
