Michigan's Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) announced a call for applications for their Reliable Rides Incentive Grant Pilot Program, backed by $260,000 in funding. The initiative is targeting small and medium-sized manufacturers, urging them to partner with workforce groups to improve employee transportation, a step that is hoped to enhance job access and retention rates. Interested parties have until Feb. 9, 2026, to submit their proposals for grants that could reach up to $20,000 each.
"This Reliable Rides Incentive Grant funding opportunity is about helping Michiganders overcome transportation challenges so they can build better lives," LEO Director Susan Corbin stated, according to a release from the Michigan government. The grant, which draws from the methods outlined in the state's Reliable Rides: Connecting Workers to Jobs playbook, offers a practical solution for employees contending with transportation issues, and it represents a chance for employers to fortify their workforce.
LEO's anticipation is to award between 12 to 20 grants. The maximum grant is $20,000, with precise amounts based on the transportation model and the implementation's extent as outlined in their playbook. "Establishing strong partnerships between employers and transportation providers or local community organizations is a critical component in many of the Reliable Rides playbook models," Deputy Director of LEO's Office of Employment and Training, Stephanie Beckhorn, highlighted the importance of collaboration in the new initiative, as mentioned on the Michigan official website.
Requirements for applicants include a commitment to adopting a transportation initiative based on the playbook's models and a strategy for maintaining the program post-grant period. Director of MI Auto Workforce Hub Amanda Lawrence highlighted the potential impact of the funding: "This funding opportunity will provide real-world solutions to transportation challenges faced by many Michigan workers, including individuals with disabilities, and it will support employers who will benefit from a more consistent and reliable workforce," she stated, in a statement obtained by the Michigan government publication.
The Reliable Rides: Connecting Workers to Jobs playbook is an accessible resource designed for employers to craft effective transportation solutions to bolster employee reliability and workplace productivity. Applicants must scramble to finalize their proposals, as the deadline is approaching quickly on February 9, 2026. Grant awards are scheduled to be announced the following month, in March.
