Motorists in Michigan are seeing a small drop in gas prices, with the average price of regular unleaded gasoline falling 10 cents from last week to $2.86 per gallon, AAA said. This is 24 cents lower than the price at the same time last year.

Gas prices across Michigan varied by location, with the highest averages reported in Ann Arbor at $2.96 per gallon, Metro Detroit at $2.90, and Benton Harbor at $2.84, while lower prices were seen in Traverse City at $2.54, Jackson at $2.72, and Marquette at $2.75, according to WXYZ. The state average matched the national average, and filling a 15-gallon tank now costs about $42, which is $8 less than last year’s peak. In Upper Michigan, prices also varied, with Baraga County averaging $2.68 per gallon and Mackinac County reporting the highest at $3.09, as reported by Upper Michigans Source.

Patrick De Haan of GasBuddy said fuel prices have risen due to higher oil prices and global tensions, stating, “Average gasoline prices have jumped for a second straight week as oil prices have climbed back above the $60-per-barrel mark amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.” He also said new sanctions on Iran and colder weather are affecting supply and refinery output, adding that “Diesel prices have jumped as colder weather boosts demand for heating oil, a combination that could keep both gasoline and diesel prices moving higher in the week ahead,” as per The Detroit News. While broader market factors have pushed prices upward, recent data shows Michigan gas prices have eased slightly, reflecting short-term fluctuations in fuel demand and costs.
