A Michigan State Police trooper suffered a bite injury yesterday while tending to a malnourished stray dog amid concerns over severe cold weather in Holly Township. The incident occurred after the Detroit Regional Communication Center was notified of a loose dog in the vicinity of Halsey and Thompson roads, leading the trooper to discover the dog in a makeshift den in an open field, as reported by FOX 2 Detroit.
Upon the trooper’s approach, attempting to provide aid to the stray, described as appearing malnourished, took a defensive stance and bit the officer's hand, causing a wound that drew blood, according to information provided by WNEM. The injured trooper was subsequently treated at a hospital and has since been released, while the dog was contained and placed in quarantine by Oakland County Animal Control, due to the absence of any collar or owner identification.
In light of the event and escalating concerns over the dropping temperatures, MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw stressed the importance of pet safety during cold spells. "It is going to be a very cold week," he told ABC12, advising pet owners that "Make sure you keep your pets inside as much as possible as the cold can cause them problems even though they have a fur coat."
