The Milwaukee Fire Department mourned the loss of a firefighter to suicide on New Year’s Day, highlighting the importance of mental health for first responders. In a social media post, the Milwaukee Fire Honor Guard, INC. emphasized the need to break the stigma around mental health struggles and encouraged people to check in on one another. "We will not forget," the group stated, underlining the impact such losses have on the community.
The post stressed the value of strong social connections as a key factor in preventing suicide. The Honor Guard urged anyone experiencing thoughts of suicide to seek immediate help by calling or texting 988, the U.S. & Canada Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. They highlighted that open conversations and support can make a critical difference for those struggling in silence.
The organization also directed members and families of the Milwaukee Fire Department to the MFD Peer Support Team, a confidential resource for guidance and assistance. Reinforcing the message, the Milwaukee Fire Honor Guard, INC.'s Post reminded readers that "Taking care of each other is not a weakness. It’s who we are," acknowledging that even those who dedicate themselves to saving lives sometimes need support themselves.
