Parking in Milwaukee is poised to squeeze a bit more from commuters' wallets, as the city implements a tiered increase to parking meter rates. Rates for downtown meters are set to rise by $0.50 per hour while those in business districts, colleges, and hospitals, will see a $0.25 bump per hour, as reported by FOX6Now. This move intends to address the swelling costs of operating and maintaining the city’s parking infrastructure.
In an effort to collect additional revenue and navigate economic pressures, the city also expanded paid parking hours last year, continuing until 9 p.m. According to a WISN report, this extension left some area employees, like Teeasia Hoye who works downtown, grappling with over $100 a week on parking alone, "Just to guarantee, like you're not being towed or anything like that." These additional costs fall heavy on the pockets of those who spend their days working in the bustle of urban commercial spaces.
Local businesses too are sounding the alarm over potential fallout. Jessica Marifke, affiliated with Pink Moon Bay, elucidated her concern to WISN around the customer experience, saying, "Oh, 100% definitely. It's a time. You know, they're always looking to see what time it is." Meanwhile, others are considering alternative solutions to avoid the steepening parking costs.
This staggered rate adjustment, which officials stated will unfold across three phases, is expected to span a four to six-week period, TMJ4 noted. While the city has not yet publicly addressed the concerns voiced by both employees and businesses, for the individuals and entities that keep the economic gears turning in Milwaukee this price hike might, be a hurdle rather than a mere bump in their daily commute.
