A New Braunfels woman is facing serious charges after being arrested for allegedly committing arson at the Comal County Republican Party headquarters, as per local authorities. The suspect, identified as 21-year-old Grace Carol Brown, has been charged with arson and burglary of a building, following the January 14 incident that led officials to respond to early reports of a fire at a GOP office.
According to FOX 7 Austin, the New Braunfels Fire Department and New Braunfels Police Department were dispatched to the Republican Headquarters located on the 200 block of Landa Street after a small fire was discovered by employees. The fire caused minor damage to the building. Brown was arrested on Jan. 22 without incident and is now being held at the Comal County Jail with her bond set at $200,000.
The New Braunfels Police Department, the New Braunfels Fire Marshal’s Office, along with the FBI, are currently leading the investigation into the fire. Whereas motives are still under scrutiny, Anita Valdez, chair of the Comal County Republican Party, described the act as "horrifying" and "a clearly political attack" in a statement obtained by the San Antonio Express-News.
City officials have not publicly commented on what may have been the motive behind the incident, however, heightened political tensions have been acknowledged by figures in the community. Valdez also expressed the community's resilience in the face of hostility: "We have thick skin, and we know that the tensions are high with the political discourse... but this is a whole new level," she told the San Antonio Express-News. The ongoing investigation has withheld the specifics of the event, but the FBI's role in the case signifies a degree of severity, with a spokesperson for the agency confirming an active investigation but also stating that they are "not aware of any active threat to the community at this time."
Lending to a tense local political climate, the attack on the GOP office marks a tense moment in what should be a civil discourse. Support for the party and its staff has been forthcoming, with Valdez noting calls from Comal County Sheriff Mark Reynolds and U.S. Rep. Chip Roy. As the investigation unfolds, additional charges could be pending against Brown.
