As the new year rings in, residents of the city need to keep an eye on the modified trash and recycling schedule due to the New Years Day holiday. There was no curbside trash or recycling collection on New Years Day, which fell on a Thursday, Jan. 1 this year. To make sure not to miss the pickup, the city announced that for the remainder of the week following the holiday, collections will slide by one day to accommodate the scheduling change.
According to an announcement posted on the city's Facebook page, residents who usually have their trash collected on Monday or Thursday should now expect service on Friday, Jan. 2. And those who normally have trash and recycling pick up on Tuesday or Friday need to prepare to have their items out by Saturday, Jan. 3. The city asks that residents "please have trash and carts out by 7 a.m. on your adjusted collection day."
The shift in schedule could easily cause some confusion, as citizens accustomed to a regular pick-up rhythm need to suddenly adjust. This change, however subtle, reminds us that even the most mundane aspects of our daily lives are subject to the rhythms of the wider world, in this case, the celebration of a new year. This hiccup in the routine is just another part of the ebb and flow of city living.
Adding to the announcement, the city took the opportunity to extend gratitude and patience from its citizens. "Thank you for your patience, and have a Happy New Year!" the city's post concluded, neatly tying a bow on the informational reminder. It's important for residents to stay informed to ensure they do not accidentally miss the rescheduled collections, which could lead to a build up of waste—a misstep everyone would prefer to avoid just as the new year begins.
